As of 12:01 tonight, homosexuals are allowed to serve openly in the U.S. military! Though Republicans recently tried one last time to stall the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” by claiming the new rules haven’t been adequately examined, Pentagon press secretary George Little said on Monday that 97% of the military has undergone training on the new law. He added, “No one should be left with the impression that we are unprepared. We are prepared for repeal.” In a few hours the Pentagon will start acting on applications it’s received from openly gay recruits, and official “Repeal Day” celebrations are scheduled around the country — but feel free to hold one wherever you are. That’s where the ambulance was directed, and that’s why the dying sailor was moved. Two shore patrolmen, a base security cop, and Seaman Jonathan Witte slipped a jacket under his body and carried him about a hundred yards, through the camphor trees of Sasebo Park, where elderly blue-smocked women tend gardens by day and spermy gaijin romance local maids at night. He was six feet one, weighed about 180 pounds, and had blond hair. To Seaman Witte, the eyewitness who’d sounded the alarm, it looked as if the sailor’s nose had been shaved clean off his face. Witte cradled the man’s head and stared at the tattoos on his arms. When the group reached the bridge, they set the sailor down and flung the blood off their hands. A crowd gathered. The ambulance arrived. A corpsman rushed up with a breathing bag, another unloaded the gurney. The sailor wasn’t breathing; his heart wasn’t beating.

“Schneider?…” said a shore patrolman squinting at the military ID he’d found in the sailor’s waist pack. “Schluter?..”

“Schindler!” cried Seaman Witte, suddenly remembering the tattoos.

UPDATE: The U.S. House of Representatives and a Senate panel have both approved measures that would begin the process of dismantling the 17-year-old “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that prohibits gays and lesbians for serving openly in the military.

After a heated Thursday night floor debate, House members voted 234-to-194 to approve a repeal amendment to the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act sponsored by Pennsylvania Rep. Patrick Murphy.

“Tonight, Congress took a historic step toward repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and toward ensuring that every American has the same opportunity I did to defend our nation,” said Murphy, who served as an Army paratrooper. “Patriotic Americans willing to take a bullet for their country should never be forced to lie about who they are in order to serve the country they love.”

George Alan Rekers, a prominent anti-gay activist who co-founded the conservative Family Research Council, was caught returning from a 10-day trip to Europe with a male escort he found on Rentboy.com, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Not to worry, Rekers told the Miami New Times, which broke the story: He claims he learned his 20-year-old companion was a prostitute only midway through their trip, they had no intimate contact, and he hired the young man only because recent surgery means “I can’t lift luggage.”

This seems highly dubious, not least because the New Times reporters spotted the retired professor pushing his baggage cart through Miami International Airport. It would be extremely difficult to stumble upon the Rentboy.com homepage, which features young well-muscled men rubbing each other’s crotches on grainy video loops, and not figure out what the site means by “rent boy.”

The site’s pages aren’t indexed by Google, either, so we’ll need to take the New Times’ word for it that the profile page for Rekers’ escort advertised his “smooth, sweet, tight ass” and “perfectly built 8 inch cock.” The young man denied that he and Rekers had sex, but he did confirm that they met via his Rentboy profile.
